‘Fleet operators must focus on embodied emissions’

Jon Lawes, Managing Director at MHC Mobility, a leading pan-European leasing business providing fleet solutions across all asset types and industry sectors, comments on the European mobility sector following today's (21 June) ACEA vehicle registration figures, which saw a 18.5% increase in passenger car registrations from the previous year, with battery-electric vehicles taking a 13.8% market share.

“European passenger car registrations have been showing steady year-on-year growth in recent months, especially in electric vehicles, which remains vital if the EU is to meet its carbon reduction targets.

“However, supply of EVs is only part of the solution and circularity needs to be truly baked-in at every stage of the journey. By now most operators have set encouraging targets for greening their fleets, but with EV manufacturing being more carbon intensive, it’s crucial the focus shifts towards addressing embodied emissions.

“In the meantime, while the fully electrified fleet is the end goal, managers must continue finding every opportunity to improve efficiencies and reduce emissions in their existing ICE fleets.”
